Every Jewish community includes people whose stories often remain in the shadows. Queer, trans, feminist, anti-zionist, differently abled, multi-heritage, multi-faith, intergenerational loving, multi-racial, Black, Indigenous, Jews of Color, Sefardi, Mizrahi, non-theological, earth loving, art making, justice seeking and Palestine solidarity Jews are reshaping traditional stories and rituals that reflect our lives and our values. Hanooka Book celebrates beautiful resistance to empire and honors legacies of liberatory communal wisdom and joy. Hanooka Book is dedicated to communities that defy militarism and patriarchal violence with the power of nonviolence.
Hanooka Book chooses to follow the traditions of rabbinic non-violence that replaced the Maccabean narratives. The value of nonviolence is summed up in the verse chanted on Shabbat Hanooka, “not by military might, and not by force of arms…”
